Prosthetic knees, hips and leg systems

Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 20 products

For an amputation above the knee, the knee joint decides how safe standing feels and how naturally the leg swings. Mechanical knees, among them the LegWorks All-Terrain Knee and Blatchford ESK+, rely on friction, geometry or a weight-activated brake. Hydraulic and pneumatic knees such as the Blatchford KX07 use a cylinder to control swing speed and resistance on stairs and slopes. Microprocessor knees read sensors many times a second and adjust that resistance continuously. The page also lists hip joints for hip disarticulation and complete leg systems that pair a knee with a matched foot. Your prosthetist selects and aligns them.

How to choose

  • Weigh stability against freedom: a braking knee protects a cautious walker, while fluid control suits varied speeds.
  • Check the weight rating and whether the knee tolerates water, dust and sand if you work outdoors.
  • Ask about battery life and charging routine before choosing a microprocessor knee.
  • Consider service access, because hydraulic and electronic knees go back to the maker for periodic maintenance.

Common questions

What is a microprocessor knee?

It is a prosthetic knee with sensors and a small computer that controls hydraulic or similar resistance in real time. It adapts to walking speed and terrain and is designed to resist buckling when the user stumbles.

What is the difference between a single-axis and a polycentric knee?

A single-axis knee bends around one hinge, like a door. A polycentric knee has several linked pivots, so its centre of rotation moves, which adds stability in stance and shortens the leg slightly as it swings through.
