Orthoses and bracing
Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 21 products
An orthosis supports a body part that is still there but weak, unstable or painful. This section starts with conventional braces for the ankle and foot, knee, spine and wrist. It then moves to leg orthoses with knee joints that lock while standing and release to swing, including microprocessor-controlled versions. A third page covers functional electrical stimulation, which uses small electrical pulses to make a muscle lift the foot or open the hand in place of a rigid brace. Many orthoses are custom made from a cast or scan. Selection and fitting are done with an orthotist.

How to choose
- Get an assessment first, because the same symptom can call for very different orthoses.
- Ask whether an off-the-shelf size will do or whether a custom-made device is required.
- Consider how the orthosis fits inside your shoes, since many need a wider or deeper shoe.
- Think about putting it on alone, especially with limited hand function or one working hand.
Common questions
What is the difference between an orthosis and a prosthesis?
An orthosis supports or aligns an existing body part, such as a brace on a weak ankle. A prosthesis replaces a body part that is missing, such as an artificial leg.
What do AFO and KAFO mean?
AFO means ankle-foot orthosis, a brace that runs from below the knee to the foot. KAFO means knee-ankle-foot orthosis, which extends up the thigh and includes a knee joint.
