Manual wheelchairs

Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 73 products

A manual wheelchair is moved by the rider pushing the handrims or by a helper pushing from behind. This section is split by purpose. Everyday chairs include rigid ultralight frames, lightweight folding frames and basic transport models. Sports chairs are built for one game each, such as basketball, tennis, rugby or racing. Outdoor chairs use levers, big tires or beach wheels to cross soft ground. Children have their own page, with frames that grow. Positioning chairs tilt, recline or stand for people who need postural support, and travel chairs fold small or fit an aircraft aisle.

How to choose

  • Decide who will propel the chair most of the time, since self-propelling and attendant-pushed designs differ in wheel size and weight.
  • Measure seat width and depth while seated, because a chair that is too wide is harder to push and to fit through doors.
  • Think about transport: a folding frame suits a car boot, while a rigid frame comes apart by removing the wheels.
  • Be realistic about daily hours in the chair, because full-time use justifies a made-to-measure frame and proper seating.

Guides for choosing manual wheelchairs

    Rigid vs folding frame

Rigid frames win on weight and push efficiency. Folding frames win on packing size. The gap is smaller than it used to be, so check real figures.

    Getting started in wheelchair tennis

You need a racket, a court and a chair you can borrow. Here is how the game works, what a tennis chair does, and how to find a first session.

Common questions

What is the difference between a rigid and a folding wheelchair?

A folding chair closes sideways on a cross-brace, which makes it easy to store. A rigid chair has a fixed, welded or bolted frame that wastes less push energy and usually weighs less, and it is stowed by taking off the wheels and folding the backrest.

How do I measure seat width for a wheelchair?

Sit on a firm flat surface and measure across the widest point of the hips or thighs. Most fitters add only a small clearance to that figure. A supplier or therapist can confirm the final size before a chair is ordered.
