Ramps and vehicle adaptations

Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 10 products

Getting through the front door and into a vehicle are the two barriers this section deals with. Ramps bridge steps and thresholds, from a small wedge at a doorway to folding portable ramps and permanent modular systems with platforms and handrails. Vehicle adaptations cover both travelling as a passenger and driving: converted vehicles with lowered floors and ramps, hand controls for accelerator and brake, systems that secure a wheelchair in the vehicle, swivel seats, and hoists that load a chair or scooter. Vehicle work is carried out by specialist installers.

How to choose

  • Measure the total height to overcome first, because that sets the ramp length you need.
  • Decide whether the user stays in the wheelchair while travelling or transfers to a car seat.
  • Check the weight of the wheelchair plus user against ramp, hoist and vehicle ratings.
  • Ask about local approval and driving assessment requirements before ordering driving controls.

Common questions

How long should a wheelchair ramp be?

Length depends on the rise and on who is using it. Many building codes use a slope of 1 in 12 for independent use. Short portable ramps for assisted use are often steeper.

Can any car be adapted for a wheelchair user?

Many cars accept hand controls, swivel seats and boot hoists. Travelling while seated in the wheelchair needs a converted vehicle with enough interior height, a ramp or lift and approved tie-downs.
