Adaptive cycles and handcycles

Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 7 products

Cycling is open to riders who cannot use standard pedals or balance on two wheels. Handcycles and handbikes are complete machines powered by the arms. Some seat the rider upright for touring and fitness, and others, like the Top End Force RX and RGK Shark RS, lay the rider back low to the ground for speed and competition. The Hase Kettwiesel ONE Handbike is a delta trike with hand cranks. Adaptive tricycles add support for the trunk and feet, and wheelchair bikes carry a passenger in front while a companion pedals behind.

How to choose

  • Choose an upright seat for easy transfers and visibility, or a recumbent position for speed and lower wind resistance.
  • Ask whether you sit or kneel, since kneeling handcycles need trunk control that not every rider has.
  • Check transport and storage early, because a recumbent handcycle is long and does not fold.
  • Consider electric assist if your routes include hills or you ride with faster companions.

Common questions

What is the difference between a handcycle and a wheelchair handbike attachment?

A handcycle is a standalone cycle with its own seat and frame. A handbike attachment is a front wheel with cranks that clips onto your wheelchair, so you stay in your own seat and can detach it on arrival.

Can you ride a handcycle with limited grip?

Often yes. Many handcycles accept special grips or cuffs that hold the hands on the cranks, and gear and brake controls can be adapted. Tell us about your hand function when you enquire.
