Five kinds of add-on appear on this page. Powered front attachments such as the Batec Electric 2, Triride Special Compact and Klaxon Klick Power clamp to the frame, lift the casters and pull the chair along with a throttle and handlebars. Manual and hybrid handbikes attach the same way but are cranked by hand, with or without motor support. Rear push-assist devices sit under the seat and drive a small wheel. Power-assist wheels replace the rear wheels and add force to each push. Joystick conversion kits make a manual chair drive like a power chair.

Front attachments give speed and distance, rear units give light help, power wheels boost each push. Here is how they differ and what to check.
It is a single powered or hand-cranked wheel with handlebars that clamps to the front of a manual wheelchair. It raises the small casters off the ground, turning the chair into a three-wheeler for outdoor use.
Power-assist wheels have motors in the hubs that sense each push on the handrim and add to it. A push-assist device is one drive unit behind or under the seat that propels the chair continuously at a set speed.
