Wheelchair ramps and thresholds

Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 4 products

Three ramp types answer three situations. Portable ramps such as the EZ-ACCESS SUITCASE Singlefold fold in half and carry by a handle, and roll-up designs like the Roll-A-Ramp coil for storage; both are laid down when needed for a few steps or a vehicle. Modular ramps, for example the EZ-ACCESS PATHWAY 3G, are assembled from sections, platforms and handrails into a semi-permanent route to a door, without concrete work. Threshold ramps are small wedges of rubber or aluminium that smooth out a door sill or a single low step.

How to choose

  • Divide the rise by your acceptable slope to get length; power chairs and helpers tolerate steeper slopes than self-propellers.
  • Check usable width between the side edges against the widest point of your chair.
  • Compare the carrying weight of a portable ramp with who will be lifting and placing it.
  • For outdoor ramps, look for a slip-resistant surface that still grips when wet.

Common questions

What slope is safe for a wheelchair ramp?

A gentle slope of about 1 in 12 is a widely used guideline for unassisted use. Steeper ramps may be acceptable for short rises with a helper or a power chair. Check the ramp maker's guidance.

Do I need planning permission for a modular ramp?

It depends on local rules and the size of the installation. Modular ramps are often treated as removable structures, but check with your local authority or landlord before installing one.
