Conventional orthoses
Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 13 products
Most bracing is still mechanical and unpowered. Ankle-foot orthoses are the largest group: carbon fibre designs such as the Allard ToeOFF and the Ottobock WalkOn are thin, springy and fit inside a shoe to hold the foot up, while plastic or custom AFOs give firmer control of the ankle. Knee braces stabilise or unload the joint with hinges and straps. Spinal braces limit movement of the trunk. Wrist-hand orthoses hold the wrist and fingers in a functional or resting position. Selection and fitting are done with an orthotist.

How to choose
- Carbon AFOs suit mild to moderate foot drop; marked ankle instability usually needs a more rigid design.
- Sizes are based on shoe size and leg measurements, and some models can be trimmed by an orthotist.
- Knee braces differ by purpose, so say whether the aim is stability, unloading or protection after surgery.
- Watch the skin for red marks in the first weeks and report any that do not fade quickly.
Common questions
Can I wear an AFO with normal shoes?
Usually, if the shoe has a removable insole, a firm heel and laces or straps that open wide. Many people go up half a size or choose a wider fitting.
What is a carbon fibre AFO?
It is a light ankle-foot orthosis made from carbon composite. A footplate under the foot connects to a strut and a shin or calf section, and the material flexes and springs back during walking.
