Positioning and special-function wheelchairs

Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 17 products

This group answers needs that a standard frame cannot meet. Tilt-in-space chairs such as the Ki Mobility Focus CR, Invacare Rea Azalea and Quickie IRIS tip the whole seat backward without changing the hip angle, which shifts pressure and helps a person who cannot hold an upright posture. Reclining chairs open the backrest instead. Bariatric models have wider seats and reinforced frames for higher body weights. Standing wheelchairs raise the user to an upright position. One-arm drive chairs let someone propel and steer with a single hand through a double handrim or a lever.

How to choose

  • Tilt keeps the hip angle fixed, while recline opens it, so ask a therapist which movement suits the user.
  • Check the overall length and width in full tilt, because these chairs need more room indoors.
  • Compare the stated maximum user weight with body weight plus cushions, bags and any equipment carried.
  • Find out whether the carer or the user operates the tilt, and where the release lever is placed.

Common questions

What is a tilt-in-space wheelchair?

It is a chair whose seat and backrest tip back together as one unit. The angles at the hips and knees stay the same, so the person does not slide forward while weight moves from the seat to the back.

How does a one-arm drive wheelchair work?

The common design puts two handrims on one side. Pushing both turns both wheels and the chair goes straight. Pushing only one turns the chair. Other designs use a single pump lever that also steers.
