Stance-control and microprocessor orthoses
Last updated: 5 October 2026 · Total: 4 products
A traditional long leg brace keeps the knee locked straight for the whole step, which is safe but makes walking stiff and tiring. Stance-control orthoses such as the Ottobock FreeWalk and the Fillauer Swing Phase Lock 2 lock the knee when weight is on the leg and release it to bend as the leg swings forward. Some do this mechanically, others electronically like the Ottobock E-MAG Active. Microprocessor-controlled KAFOs, the Ottobock C-Brace being the known example, use sensors and hydraulics to vary knee resistance through the whole step. Assessment and fitting are done with an orthotist.

Swing Phase Lock 2 (SPL2)
Stance-control orthoses. Gravity-driven stance-control knee joint for KAFOs that locks in stance and swings freely.
How to choose
- Each joint has entry requirements such as hip strength and knee range, which are checked in assessment.
- Mechanical systems need a consistent step to trigger; electronic ones are more tolerant of variation.
- Microprocessor orthoses allow controlled knee bending on slopes and when sitting down, at higher cost.
- Consider battery charging, added weight on the leg and how the device fits under clothing.
Common questions
What is a stance-control orthosis?
It is a knee-ankle-foot orthosis with a knee joint that locks automatically during stance, when the leg carries weight, and unlocks during swing so the knee can bend.
Who might use a microprocessor KAFO?
It is designed for people with weakness or paralysis of the thigh muscles from causes such as polio, incomplete spinal cord injury or nerve damage. A specialist assesses whether a person meets the criteria.
